What are the current Data Destruction Standards?

The secure disposal of sensative electronic information is a serious concern for virtually every business organization, and person on this planet. We at , A Recycling Company, take that serious.  There are no fewer than 20 different data destruction standards for using software to wipe hard drives and other memory devices, and different recommended physical destruction methods, like with NIST approved shredders.

Learn which standard is right for your business or organization.

NIST 800-88 and DOD 5220.22-M

1. Disposal: shredding all paperdocuments or other media with non-confidential information

2. Clearing: rendering all electronic data unreadable and irretrievable.

3. Purging: protecting data from a "labratory attach" or highly skilled data thieves.

4. Destroying: the physical destruction process includes desintegration, pulverizing, incineration, melting, and/or shredding

DOD 5220.22-M is no longer used by the Department of Defence and other governmental agencies. NIST 800-88 is the current  industry benchmark. A Recycling Company upholds other specific governmental data destruction requirements like NSA.

A professional data sanitization company like A Recycling Company can sanitize your devices to any level you specify and will provide a certificate of destruction or certificate of data destruction upon completion.

We obey all privacy laws under HIPPA, that no personal or business data will be exposed. Included in these privacy laws are also Sarbanes Oxley (mandates certain practices in financial record destruction), Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (protection of consumers personal financial information)
